Standing Up In The Margins: Jewish Women and Social Change

Standing up for justice is a Jewish value as dictated by the earliest texts. Yet the position of women in Jewish spaces has long been that of marginalization. Nonetheless, modern women in the US have blazed trails in the name of justice. This is particularly true because of organizations like The National Council of Jewish Women, or NCJW, founded in 1893 in response to women wanting to lift up their community rather than lift and pour teapots for men. The radical work of the founders of NCJW addressed reproductive rights, immigrant justice, and labor issues. Founded in Miami 98 years ago, the Greater Miami Section built and helped establish organizations such as The Greater Miami Jewish Federation, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, Guardian Ad Litem, Switchboard of Miami and Casa Valentina. Discover what women have contributed in the past and how to follow in their footsteps now!
